Career/Pay Structure

Nurses have different titles in different states of Australia and across the world. Generally speaking, most Western Australian Government Hospitals use the following (or similar) titles for nurses:

Graduate Enrolled Nurse

After completing an 18 month Certificate qualification at TAFE, The Enrolled Nurse (EN) is eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of WA. On completion of this training the EN is eligible for registration with the Nurses Board. The Graduate EN undertakes a Graduate Program, which is a 12-24 month paid position offering the graduate EN a supportive transition into the workforce. EN Pay Point Level 1.

Enrolled Nurse

After completing an 18 month Certificate qualification at TAFE, The Enrolled Nurse (EN) is eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of WA. The EN practices with, and under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and assists in the provision of nursing care. ENs retain responsibility for their personal actions whilst remaining accountable to the Registered Nurse for all delegated functions. EN Pay Point Level 1-4

Advanced Skills Enrolled Nurse

The Advanced Skills Enrolled Nurse is a promotional position for ENs and applications can only be made in response to advertised vacancies. The Advanced Skills Enrolled Nurse practices with, and under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and assists in the provision of nursing care. The Advanced Skills Enrolled Nurse completes patient care using EN advanced level clinical skills and undertakes delegated administrative responsibilities. The Advanced Skills Enrolled Nurse retains responsibility for their personal actions whilst remaining accountable to the Registered Nurse for all delegated functions. EN Pay Point Level 5

Graduate Registered Nurse (Staff Nurse)

Registered Nurses (RN) undertake Degree level training for 3 or 3.5 years at University. On completion of this training the RN is eligible for registration with the Nurses Board. The Graduate RNs undertake a First Year Clinical Development Program, which is a 12-month fulltime paid position offering the graduate RN a supportive transition into the workforce. In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse the Graduate RN is responsible for the delivery of a safe standard of nursing care. RN pay point Level 1, increment 1.

Registered Nurse

In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse the Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of a high standard of nursing care. The Registered Nurse acts as a role model and undertakes a teaching role in nursing practice for ENs and more junior staff. RN pay point Level 1, increment 1 to increment 9.

Clinical Nurse

All positions above Registered Nurse (Level 1) are considered promotional RN positions. Applications for these positions can only be made in response to advertised vacancies. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for the quality of patient care delivered and the standard of nursing practice in an assigned ward/unit. RN pay point Level 2, increment 1 to increment 4.

Staff Development Nurse

The Staff Development Nurse is responsible for implementing and evaluating staff development and education programs at the ward/unit level. Assumes responsibility and accountability for own actions. RN pay point Level 2, increment 1 to increment 4.

RPH Nursing

Area Manager

The Area Manager is responsible for the management of human and material resources within a defined area in consultation with the Nurse Manager. RN pay point Level 2, increment 1 to increment 4.

Clinical Nurse Manager

The Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for the management and standards of clinical nursing practice, patient care delivery and the management of human and material resources and budgetary monitoring within an assigned area of speciality. Senior Registered Nurse Pay Point Level 3.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for patient safety and the delivery of quality patient care by all clinical nursing personnel within an assigned area of the speciality. The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for developing standards of practice, implementing changes to clinical practice and initiating research and quality improvement activities. Senior Registered Nurse Pay Point Level 3.

Clinical Nurse Consultant

The Clinical Nurse Consultant is responsible for: providing a clinical consultancy service within an assigned area of speciality; developing standards of practice; implementing changes to clinical practice; and initiating research and quality improvement activities within their area of expertise to relevant customers internal and external to the position. Senior Registered Nurse Pay Point Level 4.

Nurse Manager

The Nurse Manager is responsible for developing policies and standards to provide sound nursing human resource management practices within the hospital. Also responsible for the management of nursing staff. Senior Registered Nurse Pay Point Level 1-3

Nursing Director

Responsible for the operational management of the relevant Division. Responsible for standards of practice for nursing & support services within the Division. Member of the Divisional Executive responsible for achieving the Division's Business Plan & Strategic goals. Senior Registered Nurse Pay Point Level 8-10
